WTA Cincinnati Day 2 Predictions
Ons Jabeur vs Anett Kontaveit
This should be an incredible matchup. Kontaveit is an aggressive player who is one of the world’s best when she plays well. That’s been on and off for her recently, though she does do better on hard courts. Jabeur, meanwhile, is in the midst of the best year of her career, and it’s only getting better. She’s been winning matches and titles this year and last, continuously making history. Jabeur’s all-court counterpunching game can frustrate any player, but on a faster court Kontaveit has the advantage.
Prediction: Kontaveit in 3
Camila Giorgi vs Jessica Pegula
Pegula is a strong player in the midst of the best year of her career. She plays well and can out-work anyone from the back of the court. Giorgi is a precocious talent with huge firepower, but she’s wildly inconsistent. Then again, Giorgi is coming off the best week of her career, as she blasted her way to the title in Montreal. I can never expect Giorgi to play well, but after what we saw last week, we can’t expect her not to either. If she plays like she did last week, she wins easily.
Prediction: Giorgi in 2
Coco Gauff vs Su-wei Hsieh
Hsieh hasn’t been great recently, which doesn’t bode well for her in this matchup. Gauff made her first breakthrough back in 2019 at Wimbledon, but she has done something far more important this year–she’s found consistency. Gauff is a top talent playing like a top player. She can stick with the best in the game on her best day. She can crush players like Hsieh even on her weaker days.
