After the opening round spread over two days at ATP Los Cabos, we are getting all of the Round of 16 action packed into one day. As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match. We look at four matches in this article, and four in a separate article.
ATP Los Cabos Day 3 Predictions
Jordan Thompson vs Sebastian Ofner
Head-to-head: first meeting
The fifth seed dismissed 42-year-old Ivo Karlovic in his opener with a straight-set win. Thompson is coming into Los Cabos off of a semifinal in Newport, so he will be hoping to continue the good form after the surface change.
His opponent, Sebastian Ofner, won the Austrian derby in the first round as Jurij Rodionov retired a set and a break down. Thompson’s recent form makes him a strong favorite over Ofner.
Prediction: Thompson in 2
Evgeny Donskoy vs John Isner
Head-to-head: Donskoy 1-1 Isner
The experienced Russian broke a four-match losing streak with his first-round win over Jason Jung. Donskoy is not having a good season with an 8-17 record in 2021, though this win might be confidence-inducing.
The 36-year-old American has been on a part-time schedule this year, playing only six tournaments so far. However, the hardcourt season is when Isner really comes alive, so don’t be surprised if he leaves the tournament a champion. The head-to-head is split, though the matches took place during the 2013 grass season.
Prediction: Isner in 2
Alex Bolt vs Emilio Gomez
Head-to-head: first meeting
The Australian won his first-round match against Andreas Seppi in a bizarre fashion, losing the first set 6-0 before coming back to win 0-6 6-2 6-3. Bolt will be hoping to transform his grass season form onto hard.
As expected, Gomez won his opener against Nicolas Mejia quite easily, improving his head-to-head to 4-0 against the young Colombian.
Prediction: Gomez in 3
Brandon Nakashima vs Sam Querrey
Head-to-head: first meeting
The 19-year-old had a very strong start to the season at indoor hard Challengers and hard courts are his best surface. Nakashima won his opener in three sets against Jeffrey John Wolf, another young American.
His next opponent is a much more experienced Sam Querrey. The 33-year-old has been struggling to find form since the tour restart last August, his record since being 9-15. However, Querrey is the 2017 Los Cabos champion, so that experience might complicate things for young Nakashima.
Prediction: Nakashima in 3
