After few weeks, The Lucky Loser Tennis Podcast is back and stronger than ever! We have a new, more colorful logo, and we will attempt to have guests as often as possible. For the second time, Cody and I welcome a British guest to our podcast. Following Sam Barker of the Last Word on Tennis, we were proud to welcome superfan Joe, known as @ProdigyRep.
Just in 2017, Joe has already attended two slams in Roland Garros and Wimbledon, as well as the ATP 500 in Rotterdam with his friend and LWOT writer Jake Davies. Joe is also a regular at the ATP World Tour Finals in London. His ultimate fan goal is to attend all 4 slams.
With such a guest, the discussion had to start with attending tournaments. Joe compared Grand Slams and smaller tournaments. He personally likes the cozy feel of the Challengers and the dramatic matches you can find between the lower ranked players as opposed to “Federer beating up on some scrub in 3 sets”.
After discussing tournaments some more, we get to the tennis that went down this past week in Canada.
Alexander Zverev triumphed over Roger Federer, winning his second ATP Masters 1000 of the year in Montreal. Zverev joins Jo-Wilfried Tsonga as the only two non-Big 4 players to win two Masters 1000.
Denis Shapovalov was definitely the story of the tournament. The 18 year-old Canadian got the biggest win of his career so far over Rafael Nadal and went all the way to the semifinals. Shapovalov has also broken into Top 70 for the first time in his career.
Elina Svitolina took the title in Toronto, making Caroline Wozniacki lose her 6th final this year. Sloane Stephens is back with this awesome semifinal run!
Rafael Nadal becomes the new No. 1 in anticlimactic fashion as Roger Federer withdraws from Cincinnati.
