Day 3 of the ATP Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport will see the entire second round. The grass season concludes, and we have some very good grass players to watch on Wednesday. We at LWOT are predicting every match for you, as always. Who do you think will win? We also have the rest of the day’s matches in a separate article.
ATP Newport Day 3 Predictions
Denis Kudla vs Jenson Brooksby
Denis Kudla might be the Tour’s last remaining grass-court specialist. He loves the surface and gets almost all of his wins on it. Seriously, he has as many grass-court wins in his career as hard-court wins–and there are over six times as many hard-court weeks on the schedule. Brooksby is a fun rising youngster who impressed in college, but Kudla has the surface advantage.
Prediction: Kudla in 2
Jordan Thompson vs Yuichi Sugita
Sugita has a solid game, and he moves pretty well on the grass, but he’ll be outmatched here. Sugita has nothing that can challenge Thompson’s firepower. As long as the Aussie plays within himself and doesn’t have a bad spell of play, he’ll win easily.
Prediction: Thompson in 2
Ivo Karlovic vs Alexander Bublik
This will be a fascinating contrast of styles. Karlovic still has a massive serve, though at 42 years old it misfires a lot more than it used to. Bublik, meanwhile, well, his game is hard to explain. The Kazakh is pretty good on the grass, though. Combine that with Karlovic only getting one day to recover from a tough three-set match, and I think that spells an easy win for Bublik.
Prediction: Bublik in 2
Sam Querrey vs Maxime Cressy
Cressy might be the most fun player to watch on Tour, but Querrey is really good on grass. He disappointed a bit at Wimbledon this year, but his game just does so well on the lawn. It will be fun to watch, but the outcome won’t ever be in doubt.
Prediction: Querrey in 2
