Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in action ahead of the Wimbledon Championships.

With a number of the game’s best set to take to the court on day two at Wimbledon, there should be plenty of exciting tennis. As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match on the slate including Matteo Berrettini vs Guido Pella, Roger Federer vs Adrian Mannarino, Fernando Verdasco vs Grigor Dimitrov, Nick Kyrgios vs Ugo Humbert, Hubert Hurkacz vs Lorenzo Musetti, Alexander Zverev vs Tallon Griekspoor and Kei Nishikori vs Alexei Popyrin. But who will reach the round of 64?

Wimbledon Day 2 Predictions

Jan-Lennard Struff vs Daniil Medvedev

Jim: This is a very difficult first-round draw for Daniil Medvedev to negotiate. Indeed, Jan-Lennard Struff beat him just a fortnight ago in straight sets at the ATP Halle Open. But in the rarefied air of a Grand Slam, the task will be that much harder for the German. Particularly as Medvedev has found some form, winning the title in Mallorca last week.

Prediction: Medvedev in 4

Jakub: Though Medvedev has never made the second week at Wimbledon, he is considered one of the main favorites outside of Novak Djokovic. The Russian leads the head-to-head 4-2, but lost their last meeting two weeks ago in Halle in straight sets. Medvedev followed that loss up with a title in Mallorca. Outside of the Medvedev win, Struff lost his other two matches in the lead-up, but he can prove to be a tricky opponent to the Russian again.

Prediction: Struff in 5

Anurag: This should be an entertaining affair. Despite having upset the Russian in their previous encounter in Halle, there is the overwhelming sense that Struff is coming up against immovable mountain that is Medvedev too early in the tournament. The relatively slower courts (than in Halle) at Wimbledon are more favourable to the Russian. The German may need a miracle to pull this off.

Sam Querrey vs Pablo Carreno Busta

Jim: This has the makings of another close contest and it’s probably a match both men would rather be playing later in the tournament. Sam Querrey showed both his brilliance and his frailties last week in Mallorca, reaching the final but losing there comprehensively to Medvedev. Carreno Busta lost at the same event to the same player in the semifinals. He did take a set off the Russian though and has also had an extra day to prepare. That might just give him a crucial edge.

Prediction: Carreno Busta in 5

Jakub: Though Medvedev has never made the second week at Wimbledon, he is considered one of the main favorites outside of Novak Djokovic. The Russian leads the head-to-head 4-2, but lost their last meeting two weeks ago in Halle in straight sets. Medvedev followed that loss up with a title in Mallorca. Outside of the Medvedev win, Struff lost his other two matches in the lead-up, but he can prove to be a tricky opponent to the Russian again.

Prediction: Struff in 5

Anurag: Querrey is going to amass too many free points for the Spaniard to keep up with. Wimbledon is the American’s go-to slam. He will be eager to employ his slightly monotonous yet effective serve-and-volley game at SW19 as he resumes his grass-court rampage on Tuesday.

Prediction: Querrey in 4

Daniel Elahi Galan vs Federico Coria

Jim: Both Daniel Elahi Galan and Federico Coria are considerably more at home on a clay court than they are on a grass court, but they can play on the surface. However, it is telling that whilst Galan was in Mallorca last week, Federico Coria has spent the last three weeks playing on the clay in Challengers. He won a title and was in a final on Sunday, but it is hard to see him managing the switch to the grass in so little time.

Prediction: Galan in 3

Jakub: Both players are staunch clay courters, Coria to the point that he even played a clay Challenger last week. The Argentine was the one to win their only meeting back in 2017, but I believe the Colombian’s grass preparation will pay off.

Prediction: Galan in 3

Anurag: Both players qualified for the main draw on the back of their rankings. Neither has a grass-court record to speak of. This should be a roller-coaster ride. How about a toss of the coin?

Prediction: Galan in 5

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga vs Mikael Ymer

Jim: If this is to be Jo-Wilfried Tsonga’s last Wimbledon, one can only hope that he will put on one last show. The Frenchman has a game built for grass-court tennis and if he has never managed to reach a Wimbledon final, he has certainly played some good tennis at the All England Club. Mikael Ymer’s court-coverage will test the veteran, but Tsonga’s exuberant attacking game should see him into the second round.

Prediction: Tsonga in 4

Jakub: Though Tsonga is a two-time semifinalist at Wimbledon, the Frenchman is most likely playing his farewell season, having won one match since 2019. Ymer is not the most formidable opponent on grass, but he did notch two wins in the lead-up and should have enough to give Tsonga his Wimbledon send-off.

Prediction: Ymer in 4

Anurag: Tsonga has a truckload of experience, whilst Ymer is a beginner on grass. Once ranked as high as world #5, the Frenchman has been struggling to battle past injuries of late. Tsonga’s woes are such that he finds himself losing to qualifiers. Ymer’s recent rise is not going to help that either.

Prediction: Ymer in 4
