With just one week remaining until Wimbledon, players are using the ATP Mallorca Championships to refine their grass-court games. Monday will see eight first round matches, plus one holdover from Sunday. Who will advance? We share our thoughts on the matches. Four are in this article, and the other four are in a separate article. Who do you think will win?
ATP Mallorca Day 2 Predictions
Stefano Travaglia vs Guido Pella
Pella has never particularly loved the grass, but he did seem to find a seem in 2019, reaching the Wimbledon quarterfinals. Travaglia, meanwhile, has never won a Tour-level main draw match on grass, though he has twice successfully gone through Wimbledon qualifying. Still, in both talent and grass pedigree, Pella has all the advantages.
Prediction: Pella in 2
Lukas Klein vs Dusan Lajovic
Klein has never played a professional-level event on grass before, but he was very successful in qualifying in Mallorca. Lajovic, meanwhile, has played plenty on grass in his career–with atrocious results. The Slovakian looks solid and like he really likes the grass. I think we’ll see an impressive run here.
Prediction: Klein in 3
Lloyd Harris vs Corentin Moutet
Moutet is an impressive young player, but he likes the clay better than the grass. He’s making progress and looks like a future second-week Major contender. Lloyd Harris, meanwhile, is somehow rising rapidly yet quietly. And the grass suits his aggressive game very well. Watch out for the South African.
Prediction: Harris in 2
Sam Querrey vs Roberto Carballes Baena
Roberto Carballes Baena is a decent enough player, though he has no particular affinity for grass. Querrey, meanwhile, loves the green surface. The American is a former Wimbledon semifinalist for a reason. And while he often underwhelms in smaller events, his game works way too well on grass to lose here.
Prediction: Querrey in 2
