Day 5 at the ATP Geneva Open will be a long one for some players. All four quarterfinals will be held on Thursday, but two of Wednesday’s Round of 16 matches weren’t yet completed due to rain. We will try to edit in the last two quarterfinals to this article once they’re set, but for now we’re only discussing two matches.
Note: This article was updated on Thursday to include the other two quarterfinal matches.
ATP Geneva Open Day 5 Predictions
Pablo Andujar vs Dominic Stephan Stricker
Dominic Stricker has made the absolute most of his opportunity this week. With this showing, the teenager has definitely put himself in the conversation for a French Open wild card. He is in his first ATP main draw, and has already reached the quarterfinal. And, fortunately for him, he has a great draw here.
Pablo Andujar, meanwhile, is coming off the biggest win of his career. He just upset Roger Federer in the second round here. Backing up a win like that will be difficult, and Stricker really is playing incredible tennis. Stricker will crack the Top 350 in the world next week, and another win here would move him into the Top 300. Expect the young Swiss phenom to make a statement in this one.
Prediction: Stricker in 2
Pablo Cuevas vs Grigor Dimitrov
Cuevas did not struggle much in his Thursday morning match, easily defeating teenage wild card Arthur Cazaux in straight sets. Cuevas is a solid player, and Dimitrov has not been at his most consistent recently. Fatigue won’t be a factor here, and the Bulgarian hasn’t picked up a strong win on clay yet this year. It will be a tight one, and I think Dimitrov falters late.
Prediction: Cuevas in 3
Denis Shapovalov vs Laslo Djere
Shapovalov survived a brutal battle against Marco Cecchinato in over two hours. He does get quite a rest before the evening match with Djere, but winning two matches in a day is a tough task, especially after what the Canadian just went through. He’s more talented than the Serbian, but Djere is solid enough to hold his own, and Shapovalov has had his ups and downs recently. Fatigue could very well cause this to be a “down” match for him.
Prediction: Djere in 3
Casper Ruud vs Dominik Koepfer
This has the potential to be a great matchup, but don’t get your hopes up too high. Koepfer has serious talent, but he’s still a little inconsistent. Ruud, on the other hand, isn’t quite elite, but he’s just a cut below that level. I expect the Norwegian to challenge for the title here, and Koepfer playing well might be his biggest remaining obstacle.
Prediction: Ruud in 2
