After an entertaining week at the WTA Guadalajara Open, just two players remain in the draw. Both players will, unsurprisingly, be desperate to get their hands on the title. But will it be Sara Sorribes Tormo or Eugenie Bouchard who triumphs?
WTA Guadalajara Open Final Prediction
Eugenie Bouchard vs Sara Sorribes Tormo
Head-to-head: Sorribes Tormo 1-0 Bouchard
Bouchard may remain a long way from the lofty position she once occupied in the rankings, but the Canadian deserves real credit for the manner in which she has resurrected her career over the last six months or so. Having been ranked outside the world’s top 300 when the tennis season was brought to a halt by the coronavirus pandemic, Bouchard has been steadily climbing back towards the top 100. If she can maintain the level she has shown in Guadalajara, she will surely get her ranking back into double digits sooner rather than later.
Sorribes Tormo, meanwhile, arrived at the WTA Guadalajara Open after a disappointing spell in Australia during which she managed to win just one match. But she has bounced back impressively in Mexico, picking up solid wins over Greet Minnen, Leonie Kung, Astra Sharma and Marie Bouzkova, with the Belgian Minnen the only player to have taken a set off her so far. However, with Bouchard also having dropped just one set this week, one imagines that the final will be more competitive.
The pair have met just once before, with Sorribes Tormo winning in fairly convincing fashion in the first round in Monterrey four years ago. But with Bouchard seemingly having broken out of the long slump that almost entirely derailed her career, she may well be confident of avenging that defeat. She certainly has the greater pedigree on hard courts. After all, she is a not a former Australian Open semifinalist for nothing. Expect that greater comfort on the asphalt to give her the decisive edge.
Prediction: Bouchard in 3
