Belgium’s David Goffin has found a multitude of success in European indoor hard court tournanments over the year’s and he’s one of the favorites to take the title in Montpellier. An in-form Lorenzo Sonego stands in his way, while Roberto Bautista Agut takes on home favorite Ugo Humbert.
David Goffin vs Lorenzo Sonego
It’s been an inconsistent year for Goffin early on, while Sonego has picked up momentum with a pair of match wins at this venue. Goffin is the more accomplished player and should be the favorite but the upset is certainly possible here and I’ll pick it. Sonego’s momentum can’t be ignored. Sonego in 3
Dennis Novak vs Peter Gojowczyk
Gojowczyk is showing some impressive form, having qualified and won four straight at this venue, prior to that he had a challenger semi, while Novak is 3-2 on the year. This will be a nip and tuck battle but Gojowczyk has more upside to his game and should prevail. Gojowczyk in 2
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina vs Egor Gerasimov
While both players have demonstrated good form, Gerasimov is the one to watch here, he has two wins on the trot including a win against Andy Murray and he won matches in both the AO and the warm up tournament prior to it. Gerasimov is a player clearly on the upswing and perhaps an ATP title is in the cards here. Gerasimov in 2
Roberto Bautista Agut vs Ugo Humbert
Humbert’s form can’t be overlooked here, he finished the year strong at the Paris Masters, pushed Nick Kyrgios in the second round of the AO and is now playing well again at a home venue. Bautista Agut is the more accomplished player but it’s been a slow start to the season for the veteran Spaniard and home cooking can’t be overlooked. I’ll again go with an upset. Humbert in 3
