We have reached the final match of this year’s ATP Finals, and it’s what everyone expected to see. Okay, maybe not. Daniil Medvedev and Dominic Thiem are two of the best in the game, and they definitely both deserve to be here, but there is a definite surprise in Novak Djokovic’s absence. Each of the men in the final had to upset an all-time great (Djokovic and Rafael Nadal) to get here, and they are rewarded with a chance at one of the biggest ones of their careers.
ATP Finals Final Prediction
Dominic Thiem vs Daniil Medvedev
These two have met three times before in their careers, though no match was as big as this. Thiem has won two of their matches, including the final in Barcelona last year. Medvedev, though, has been more impressive so far in London this week. Thiem gutted out an impressive third-set tiebreak to take out Djokovic in the semifinals after an incredible round robin win over Nadal. It’s an impressive performance, no doubt. But Medvedev has been even more impressive.
Aside from his first set against Nadal in their semifinal, Medvedev has dominated all competition this week. That includes a dominant victory over Djokovic in the round robin matches. The Russian has just been on another level all week, and he’s doing it against the best players in the world.
This match will come down to whether Medvedev suffers any nerves in crunch time. He has never been in a position to win a title this big before in his career. He faced Nadal in the final of the 2019 US Open, but he played from behind all match. If he can keep up his incredible counterpunching from the baseline, he’ll very quickly earn a lead in this one. As long as the Russian’s nerves don’t get the best of him, he should come out of this with the biggest title of his career.
