Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Jan-Lennard Struff

Head to head: 2-2

Stefanos Tsitsipas and Jan-Lennard Struff always produce thrilling matches. Their first meeting, won by Tsitsipas, was their only encounter to end in straight sets and even then it featured a first set tiebreak. Struff’s serve and forehand combination helps him stay in matches even when he is below his best, and he has worked to consistently improve his movement. Tsitsipas obviously has the better overall career results. He also has more variety in his game which means that he has more avenues to victory. Struff is the kind of opponent who test the mettle of top players in early rounds of a tournament. If Tsitsipas should win, the victory will be a confidence booster for the rounds to come. Though it will likely be a closely contested match, Tsitsipas should prevail.

Prediction: Tsitsipas in 3.

Daniil Medvedev vs Jason Jung

Head to head: 0-0

Daniil Medvedev and Jason Jung have never played before but, even with Medvedev well below his best in recent tournaments, Jung is likely to fall in two sets. Medvedev’s swashbuckling tennis of a year ago at times has felt like a distant memory as he has fallen early at several tournaments. Medvedev, however, has the talent to turn his dull play around. Medvedev has had a series of tough opponents in early rounds which has compounded his struggles. Jung may be the perfect opponent for the struggling Russian.

Prediction: Medvedev in 2.

Jannik Sinner vs Casper Ruud

Head to head: 0-0

The prospect of Jannik Sinner and Casper Ruud facing off for the first time is mouthwatering. These are two of the most talented and exciting players of the last year. Both are still finding the full potential in their tennis. Sinner, so far, has shown the prospect of a higher ceiling on his game, but Ruud has had better results and holds the higher ranking. This match will be a test for Sinner: can he take on a player who is at a similar place in his career? Ruud is three years older than Sinner, but they are both in the process of rising through the rankings. Sinner has the edge since he is capable of a level that Ruud has, to date, not displayed. Either way this is the first match in what could develop into a regularly featured rivalry in years to come.

Prediction: Sinner in 2.

Novak Djokovic vs Borna Coric

Head to head: 3-0 Djokovic

The head to head between Novak Djokovic and Borna Coric says it all. The two are similar players, but Djokovic has an X factor that Coric has never developed. Djokovic would be the favorite just going on his record in 2020. Even without the weight of his impressive history of decades of consistent success at the top of the game, his 38-2 match record would speak for itself.

Prediction: Djokovic in 2.
