The 2020 Tennis Season’s Biggest Moments

2020 was an incredible year for tennis, even with the extended pandemic break. Let’s look back at the year’s biggest moments.

JANUARY

24th – Former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki retired after her 3rd round Australian Open defeat.

FEBRUARY

1st – Sofia Kenin won her first Grand Slam title by defeating Garbiñe Muguruza in the Australian Open final.

2nd – Novak Djokovic won a record-extending 8th Australian Open title, defeating Dominic Thiem in the final. This was Djokovic’s 17th Grand Slam title.

26th – Former World No. 1 & career Grand Slam holder Maria Sharapova retires at 32 years old.

AUGUST

26th – The Bryan Brothers, considered the best doubles team in tennis history, announced they planned to retire after the US Open; amid safety concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic, they retired before the US Open.

SEPTEMBER

12th – Naomi Osaka won her 3rd Grand Slam title, with a 2nd US Open, defeating Victoria Azarenka in the final.

13th – Dominic Thiem won his first Grand Slam title, defeating Alexander Zverev in five sets to win the US Open, becoming the first male player born in the 1990s to win a Grand Slam singles title.

OCTOBER

10th – Iga Świątek won her first Grand Slam title by defeating Sofia Kenin in the French Open final. Świątek is the first Polish player & first player born in the 21st century, male or female, to win a Grand Slam singles title.

11th – By beating Novak Djokovic in the final in straight sets, three-time defending champion Rafael Nadal won his 13th French Open title and his 20th Grand Slam singles title overall, equaling Roger Federer’s all-time record.

NOVEMBER

6th – Novak Djokovic finished as ATP World No. 1 for the 2nd time in 3 years & an Open Era record 6th time (equaling Pete Sampras).
