After a week, Jakub Bobro and Cody Fitzpatrick join you again for the Lucky Loser Tennis Podcast, this time with the largest episode yet.
We start the episode off by throwing the agenda out the window, as just a couple of hours before recording, Roger Federer withdrew from Roland Garros. We then talk about what’s next for the GOAT in his career, and how this impacts Nadal’s chances.
Then we tear into the wrap-up of Madrid, from whence Rafael Nadal and Simona Halep emerge with the trophies. Rafael Nadal, who continues to be dominant on clay, and Simona Halep, who emerges as one of the favorites for Roland Garros.
A future regular segment is up next- Lucky Loser of the Week. We both pick a player that impressed us with their run, even though they didn’t walk away with the title. I picked Alexander Zverev, for beating Verdasco, Cilic, and Berdych, proving to the world that he should not be discounted despite his recent slump. Cody chose Eugenie Bouchard for her quarterfinal run, during which she managed to beat Maria Sharapova before losing to Kuznetsova, the Canadian’s best result since her slip incident at the 2015 US Open.
After a brief preview of Rome came the Slovak part of the podcast. I previewed the $100K in Trnava, the biggest women’s tournament my home country has to offer. I also recalled some memories from when I visited the tournament as a fan in 2013 and 2015.
For another soon-to-be-regular segments we stayed in Slovakia. In the Tennis Hipster segment, we introduce a lesser-known player, usually outside the Top 100. To celebrate his breaking the Top 100, I picked Norbert Gombos. I discussed what I believe to be his career peaks so far, like quarterfinals of Marseille, title in the Bratislava challenger, or when he beat Dominic Thiem.
We then talk about Juan Monaco’s retirement, and who might follow him soon after.
Then follow a lengthy reaction segment to a thread of tweets depicting the fan tennis stereotypes by @EvaUnit_0_1, which offered memorable quotes such as “We both had our flings with John Isner” or the repeated phrase “I wasn’t around for that.”
