ATP Atlanta 2019 rolls on with John Isner starting his campaign for yet another BB&T Atlanta Open title, Reilly Opelka in a big spot, and British players Cam Norrie and Daniel Evans in action. Here are your predictions for Wednesday’s matches.
Alexei Popyrin vs Pierre-Hugues Herbert
Herbert is relatively inconsistent in singles but he’s proven himself capable on faster surfaces. He also has a h2h win in 2017 working in his favor. However, Popyrin won his first match in straights and seems to be in better form, he should have the advantage in this match, but I do expect it to be kept close by the PHH serve. Popyrin in 3
Cam Norrie vs Soonwoo Kwon
Kwon is in the best form of his career right now, and that spells trouble for Norrie who is defending semifinal points. Norrie edged Jordan Thompson in the first round, while Kwon already has three match wins this week by virtue of coming through qualifying. The 21 year old South Korean is rapidly rising through the ranks and I expect that rise to continue with a win against Norrie in round 2. Kwon in 2
Daniel Evans vs Radu Albot
Evans beat Albot in Eastbourne this year and posted a routine opening round win in the ATL. Albot also won with ease to snap a three match losing streak, but the recent Evans victory should give him the confidence to prevail. Evans in 2
John Isner vs Reilly Opelka
Isner almost never loses in Atlanta, and he’s facing his mirror image in Opelka, a tall, powerful server with a limited ground game. The two have split h2h meetings though Opelka won in Melbourne and New York this year. The Newport (and many times Atlanta) champion Isner should get his revenge though, winning in front of the home fans in one of his favorite tournaments on the calendar. Isner in 3
