Lorenzo Musetti Confirms Wimbledon Withdrawal Following Rome Injury

World No. 15 Lorenzo Musetti has announced that, after missing the French Open earlier this year, he will also be absent from the upcoming Wimbledon Championships due to the same thigh injury.

A season that started with so much promise for the Italian has continued to be derailed by physical issues, with Musetti now set to miss a second consecutive Slam due to injury.

Lorenzo Musetti’s Struggles in 2026

A Promising Start Turns Into Frustration

Musetti began the year firmly inside the Top 10 and looked every bit the elite player his ranking suggested him to be. His strongest moment came at the Australian Open, where he famously led Novak Djokovic by two sets to love in their quarterfinal clash.

However, disaster struck when the Italian was forced to retire from the match from that position due to injury. That setback impacted much of his pre-European clay swing, and when he eventually returned, he struggled to regain rhythm and accumulate match repetitions.

Although his level steadily improved as the clay season progressed, he never fully recaptured the form he displayed at the start of the year. Then, in another cruel twist, Musetti suffered a thigh injury in Rome, a tournament he had chosen to compete in despite not being fully fit, motivated by the opportunity to play in front of his home fans.

That decision ultimately proved costly, as the Italian was forced to withdraw from the French Open, where he had reached the semifinals the previous year.

While it was initially believed that Musetti would return during the grass-court season, his withdrawal from the Queen’s Club Championships raised significant concerns about the severity of the issue.

Now, in a statement posted on social media, the Italian has confirmed that he will also miss Wimbledon.

“I want to update you on my recovery from the injury I sustained in Rome: rehabilitation is going very well, and the medical results are encouraging. Unfortunately, as I have not yet been able to begin a full athletic training program, and after careful evaluation, we have come to the difficult conclusion that I will not be able to participate in Wimbledon this year. It is not an easy decision, but it is the right one. My priority is to return to the court at 100%. Thank you for your continued support — see you soon.”

Musetti has stressed that he will only return to competition when he is fully fit, rather than risking another setback by coming back too early. The injury-plagued tennis season continues to claim some of its most prominent names, with Musetti now joining two-time Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz in withdrawing from this year’s Championships.

About Zain Mustafa

Being brought up in a sports-watching home, some of the spheres flying across the TV screen stuck with me more than others, the yellow fuzzy one probably the most. A lefty Mallorcan got me into it, a righty Murcian has kept me in it after him, but to be honest, once I was in, I never felt like leaving anyway.
