WTA Rome Day 1 Predictions Including Barbora Krejcikova vs Elsa Jacquemot

The final WTA 1000 event on clay lands in Rome, with all to play for before the French Open. The first day is littered with matches, including those still looking to get into the main draw. In this piece, however, we predict the outcome of four encounters to see who’ll make the cut to the next round.

WTA Rome Day 1 Predictions

Oleksandra Oliynykova vs Petra Marcinko

Head–to–Head:  First Meeting

Petra Marcinko and Oleksandra Oliynykova are separated by the finest of margins in the rankings, and their last meeting suggests this one won’t follow a predictable script. The Croatian edged a wildly erratic three-setter on clay in Zagreb last year, and that match perfectly captures the volatility both players bring.

Marcinko may have the slightly higher ceiling and cleaner pedigree, but neither has shown enough consistency in 2026 to inspire total confidence. That’s what makes this matchup feel like a coin flip with momentum swings baked in. Oliynykova has actually notched more wins this season, hinting at greater match sharpness, but Marcinko’s ability to impose herself when locked in could tilt the balance.

Expect patches of brilliance and dips from both ends; this has all the ingredients of another three-set rollercoaster where composure, not just quality, decides the outcome. I’ll lean towards the Ukrainian to edge this one. Only just.
Prediction: Oliynykova in 3

Dayana Yastremska vs Anastasia Zakharova

Head–to–Head: Yastremska 2 – 0 Zakharova

Dayana Yastremska walks into this one with a clear target: keep Anastasia Zakharova searching for that elusive first top-level clay win. The Russian, ranked #79, has been quietly building momentum in what’s shaping up as her breakthrough season, but the dirt still isn’t her friend. Four matches, four losses, and a learning curve that’s proving steep on the surface.

Yastremska, meanwhile, already has proof she can crack the Zakharova code, edging them in straight sets at their Charleston meeting earlier this year. Consistency remains her lingering question mark, but on clay, where experience and pattern recognition matter, she holds the edge. If she settles early and dictates with her trademark aggression, this feels like a matchup she should be controlling rather than chasing.
Prediction: Yastremska in 3

Ann Li vs Shuai Zhang

Head–to–Head: Li 2 – 0 Zhang

Ann Li arrives in Rome with real momentum, the kind that turns tricky early-round matches into statements. The American has quietly pieced together a strong clay swing, backing up a season that’s already pushed her to a career-high ranking of 29. There’s a growing authority to her game and the confidence of a player who expects to win these matchups.

Across the net, Shuai Zhang hasn’t found her footing, particularly on clay. With just one win in her last eight matches, the World #73 looks short on rhythm and conviction in a surface that has never truly suited her. Unless Zhang can summon something out of nowhere, this feels firmly on Li’s racquet, and if she maintains her current level, it could be a straightforward passage into the next round.
Prediction:  Li in 2

Barbora Krejcikova vs Elsa Jacquemot

Head–to–Head: First Meeting

Barbora Krejcikova returns to the clay in Rome with more questions than rhythm. It’s her first outing since Dubai and just her eighth match of a stop-start season, so her sharpness will be under the spotlight. The two-time Major champion opens against world No. 62 Elsa Jacquemot, a player close enough in ranking to sense opportunity, especially if Krejcikova takes time to find her range.

But the catch is Jacquemot arrives with just two wins all year, and that lack of momentum could be telling. If Krejcikova settles quickly, her variety, court IQ, and big-match pedigree should tilt this firmly in her favor. Rust might keep things interesting early, but class tends to win out on clay, and if the Czech finds any kind of rhythm, she should have too much firepower down the stretch.
Prediction: Krejcikova in 2
