Emma Raducanu Reunites With Former Coach Ahead of Rome Return

In another turn in her evolving coaching story, Emma Raducanu has reunited with former coach Andrew Richardson ahead of her comeback at the Italian Open in Rome. The 23-year-old trained at the Ferrer Tennis Academy in Spain, where Richardson is based, bringing a familiar presence into her camp during a period shaped by illness and patchy form.

Richardson famously guided Raducanu during her historic 2021 US Open triumph, where she became the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam–without dropping a set. This latest collaboration, however, is expected to be short-term, focused on preparation for the clay swing rather than a full-time arrangement.

A Familiar Fix, Not a Long-Term Solution

The reunion follows Raducanu’s split with Francisco Roig earlier this year after a disappointing Australian Open. Before that, she briefly worked again with Mark Petchey in an informal setup. Since her breakout in 2021, Raducanu has cycled through multiple coaches, including Torben Beltz and Dmitry Tursunov, often favoring flexible, short-term partnerships over long-term commitments.

That approach reflects her desire to avoid burnout, though it has raised questions about stability. Health issues have added further disruption. Raducanu has not played since her loss to Amanda Anisimova in Indian Wells, after illness forced her out of several events earlier in the season.

Rome as a Reset Point

Her return at the Foro Italico offers a chance to rebuild rhythm on a surface that has historically challenged her. Clay has not been her strongest suit, but improved movement and adaptability could prove key. With Jack Draper sidelined, Raducanu carries added significance for British tennis.

Richardson’s presence provides both tactical clarity and emotional familiarity at a time when Raducanu is prioritizing confidence over major technical changes. As she steps back into competition, the focus will be on match sharpness and physical resilience.

Whether this partnership sparks a strong clay run or serves as a temporary bridge, Raducanu’s trajectory remains compelling. Still only 23, her blend of talent and determination ensures attention will follow as she looks to rediscover the level that once stunned the tennis world.
