The Madrid Open is the second ATP Masters 1000 of the European clay-court swing and main draw action is set to begin on Wednesday, April 22nd and run until Sunday, May 3rd.

Jannik Sinner is the top seed. The Italian won the first Masters 1000 of this swing in Monte Carlo after defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the final. Sinner also took over as the World No. 1. He has the chance to establish clear daylight in the points tally in the Spanish capital.

Alcaraz will miss the event in his home country due to injury. Former champion Novak Djokovic is among those who will miss out, but the field is stacked with defending champion Casper Ruud, confirming his participation. Five players will join the main draw as wild cards.

Topping the list of men’s wild cards is new Spanish sensation Rafael Jodar. The 19-year-old won his first ATP title in Marrakech and will be one to watch in Madrid. Jodar will make his debut in this tournament.

Making his final appearance in Madrid is Gael Monfils. The 39-year-old is making his 15th appearance at the event. He is a two-time quarterfinalist but has not advanced beyond the second round since 2019.

Pablo Carreno Busta is the third wild card. This will be his ninth main draw appearance. Carreno Busta has registered just one match win in eight previous visits to Madrid.

The third Spaniard in this list is Martin Landaluce, who enjoyed a breakout run at the Masters level in Miami, where he reached the quarterfinals as a qualifier. This will be his fourth main draw appearance in Madrid and he will be targeting a first-ever win.

Completing the list of wild cards is 19-year-old Italian Federico Cina. Cina made his tournament debut last season and won his opening match against Coleman Wong. He impressed in a three-set defeat to Sebastian Korda in the second round.
