Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk has withdrawn from the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, just two days after securing the biggest title of her career in Madrid, citing a right hip injury.
The 23rd seed in Rome had arrived in strong form and was widely considered a contender following her recent triumph at the Mutua Madrid Open.
Kostyuk could have had a chance to achieve a rare feat by winning both Madrid and Rome consecutively, a milestone previously reached only by a handful of players.
“After the best stretch of my career, I was looking forward to Rome, but sometimes your body has other plans, and over the past few days, I’ve been dealing with a hip issue. With my ankle still not fully at 100%, it’s just not smart to keep pushing right now, so I won’t be competing there this year,” she said in a social media post.
Her withdrawal comes at a time when she has arguably been in her best form of the season. Kostyuk has remained unbeaten on clay this year, recording 11 consecutive match victories and lifting titles in Rouen and Madrid. That run had positioned her as one of the standout performers heading into the French Open.
Kostyuk confirmed the decision to step back from competition, noting that the injury requires immediate attention. She stated that she will “take some time to recover” with the objective of regaining full fitness ahead of the French Open, which begins later this month in Paris.
“I’m sad to miss it, but I’ll see you next year. Now it’s time to recover and get ready for Paris,” she added.
The timing of the injury raises questions about her readiness for Roland Garros, but her team appears focused on ensuring long-term fitness rather than risking further complications.
With her current form and confidence on clay, Marta Kostyuk remains a player to watch in Paris, provided she recovers in time for the season’s second Grand Slam.
