Rublev has put together a very solid week. Wins over Lorenzo Sonego, Tomas Machac and Hamad Medjedovic have shown different sides of his game, especially the way he recovered after dropping the first set in the semifinals. On clay, he still does a lot of damage when he gets control with his forehand, and Barcelona’s conditions suit his ability to take the ball early and flatten out rallies. His ATP 500 pedigree also matters here. He has built much of his career around these events, and that comfort in finals can be significant.
Fils has looked dangerous in a different way. He had to survive two match points in his opener, then raised his level round by round, including impressive wins over Brandon Nakashima, Lorenzo Musetti and Rafael Jodar. His movement and weight of shot have been excellent, and he has looked increasingly comfortable constructing points on clay instead of rushing them. That was also a big part of why he won their last clay meeting.
This feels like a match that could swing on who controls the baseline first. If Rublev is dictating with the forehand, he can rush Fils and keep points on his terms. Rublev will need to win the physical battle early and keep Fils guessing, but if Fils’ serve holds up and he stays aggressive on return, he has the game to control this match from start to finish. It may not be entirely straightforward for the Frenchman, but he should have just about enough to get past Rublev.
