Holger Rune is set to make his comeback on tour at the Hamburg Open in May, as confirmed by announcements from both the tournament and the player on social media.
The former top-10 player has been sidelined since October last year due to a ruptured left Achilles tendon, but now has a clear date and tournament in place for his return.
Rune’s Timeline Confirmed
Injury Setback Halted Momentum
Rune was making a push for qualification to the Nitto ATP Finals last year when he found himself a set up against Ugo Humbert at the indoor Stockholm Open.
Disaster struck for the Dane when he suddenly felt something pop near his left ankle at the start of the second set. He was forced to retire from the match, and fears were soon confirmed when it was announced that Rune had indeed torn his Achilles tendon—an injury that typically requires a lengthy recovery period.
Rehab and Recovery Ahead of Schedule
Rune began his rehabilitation almost immediately, undergoing surgery before spending much of his recovery at the state-of-the-art Aspetar facility in Doha, Qatar.
The rehabilitation process for the former World No. 4 went as smoothly as possible, with Rune now ready to return just over seven months after the injury. This marks a notably quicker comeback from an injury that usually takes between 9 and 12 months to recover from fully.
French Open Decision Looms
It remains to be seen whether Rune will follow up his return to Hamburg by competing at the French Open or opt out of the Slam due to its physically demanding best-of-five format.
Regardless of his immediate schedule, Rune now has a defined comeback timeline as he begins his journey back up the rankings, aiming to finally fulfill the immense potential he has shown since his junior days.
