Jannik Sinner Breaks Djokovic Record, Pursues Another

As is becoming increasingly routine for him, Jannik Sinner set another record again during his third-round match against Corentin Moutet. This time, it was consecutive sets won at the Masters 1000 level, where he moved two clear of the previous record, held by the man many consider his spiritual predecessor, Novak Djokovic.

Following his straight-sets victory over Moutet, the Italian set himself clear as having now won 26 straight sets at the Masters 1000 level. The run dates back to the Paris Masters 1000 in November last year, through Indian Wells, and culminates in this moment. He had this week equalled the record by beating Damir Dzumhur in the second round.

He now faces Alex Michelsen in his 4th-round match, and with so many top players already knocked out of the tournament–most notably his great rival, Carlos Alcaraz–it leaves him with a real chance to further extend this record. He is now already the overwhelming favourite for the title, with a real chance to become the first between him and Alcaraz to win the Sunshine Double, in their own personal rivalry.

Continuing Lefty Dominance

Also, in dispatching Moutet, a left-handed player, he further extended his own dominance against lefties, having now won his last 21 games against that demographic. It now puts him within sight of Alexander Zverev, who holds the record with a 26-match winning streak against lefties between 2023 and early 2025. It is another record that’s now well within his sights. At the rate he is going about abolishing every record and the way he is currently playing, no one doubts he will eventually clinch it.

There is certainly plenty of incentive for him to keep buccaneering through the opposition as he also seeks to close in on the world #1 spot. The upcoming clay season feels like a free hit for him in many ways, as he missed out on a lot of points last season owing to his three-month ban. It certainly feels like an interesting few weeks lie in store for the Italian.
