A handful of players will be making their main draw debut on Day 2 at the ATP Adelaide International. One of those will be eighth seed Tomas Machac, who recently fell out of the Top 20. Who will reach the second round?
ATP Adelaide Day 2 Predictions
Jacob Fearnley vs Quentin Halys
Head-to-head: Fearnley 1-0 Halys
Less than 10 spots separate Fearnley and Halys in the Top 100. Fearnley entered the event with a better ranking, but only after he was granted a lucky loser spot. Halys won both of his qualifying matches and is already 5-1 for the season. The Frenchman’s heavy serve and massive forehand are always factors on hard courts, but Fearnley beats him in agility and footwork. If the Briton can step in on returns, he can pressure Halys and neutralize that firepower.
Prediction: Fearnley in 3
Damir Dzumhur vs Alexander Shevchenko
Head-to-head: first meeting
After losing to Collignon in Brisbane qualifying, Shevchenko has recorded two strong results in Adelaide to reach the main draw. Dzumhur’s first tournament of the season resulted in a first-round defeat to Nuno Borges in Hong Kong. The style match-up might favor Shevchenko, who is fluid in his ball striking and with a slightly lower error profile.
Prediction: Shevchenko in 3
Marton Fucsovics vs Ethan Quinn
Head-to-head: first meeting
Both men exited early in Brisbane. Fucsovics fell to eventual champion Daniil Medvedev in the first round of Brisbane, while Ethan Quinn was knocked out in qualifying. Both men are ranked in the Top 100, and unlike last year, they will head straight to Melbourne for the Australian Open main draw. Fucsovics has plenty of experience at this level, but Quinn made rapid progress in the past year and played nearly a full season at the tour level. The American could edge this.
Prediction: Quinn in 2
Tomas Machac vs James Duckworth
Head-to-head: Machac 0-2 Duckworth
Machac’s season started with a three-set defeat to compatriot Jiri Lehecka in Brisbane. Injuries have been Machac’s biggest drawback. The Czech had six documented retirements last season. He played 39 times, which was at least 20 matches fewer than in 2024. Duckworth is a tough player to beat on hard courts and enjoys a 2-0 head-to-head record against Machac. He maximizes the full toolkit of shots. But if health doesn’t dictate Machac’s tennis, then his clean timing and heavier ball should be enough to knock out the experienced Australian.
Prediction: Machac in 2
