Valerie Camillo Named New WTA Chairperson

The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has announced Valerie Camillo as its new Chairperson, effective November 17. She succeeds Steve Simon, who steps down after nearly a decade in charge. The appointment marks a clear turning point for the organization–a move toward greater commercial focus and modernized governance.

A New Era for the WTA

Camillo arrives with two decades of leadership experience across American sports. After starting her career in management consulting, she joined the NBA’s Team Marketing and Business Operations department, later serving as Chief Revenue and Marketing Officer for the Washington Nationals and as President and CEO of the Philadelphia Flyers and Wells Fargo Center. Her record of growing revenue, enhancing fan engagement, and managing large-scale operations aligns with the WTA’s ambitions for global expansion and financial sustainability.

Challenges and Opportunities

Camillo takes charge at a defining moment. The WTA faces an ongoing antitrust lawsuit filed by the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA) and continues talks with the ATP about merging commercial assets. Player welfare, scheduling demands, and revenue distribution remain ongoing concerns within the sport.

Still, there are signs of progress. The tour’s new commercial division, WTA Ventures, reported a 25% rise in revenue in 2024, demonstrating renewed business momentum. Camillo’s appointment is expected to build on that success, with her experience outside tennis offering a fresh approach to branding, partnerships, and global engagement.

The Final Word

The challenges ahead are significant; balancing innovation with tradition, steering the organization through legal complexities, and ensuring players remain central to decision-making. Yet the opportunity is greater still.

If Camillo can translate her business expertise into tangible progress for women’s tennis, her leadership could redefine how the WTA grows and competes on the global stage. The organization has made a clear statement of intent and in Valerie Camillo, it has chosen a leader equipped to turn that ambition into action.
