ATP Shanghai Day 1 Predictions Including Stan Wawrinka vs Fabian Marozsan

The 2025 Rolex Shanghai Masters gets underway with a packed opening day full of intriguing matchups. As one of the marquee ATP Masters 1000 events, the tournament regularly attracts the biggest names in the sport, and the first round already promises plenty of compelling storylines. As always, LWOT will be offering predictions for every match throughout the event, including all of today’s opening clashes.

Stan Wawrinka vs Fabian Marozsan

Head-to-head: First meeting

A clash between a veteran three-time Slam champion and one of the flashiest players on tour, this match is expected to be a battle of contrasts. Wawrinka’s passion for the sport and his willingness to grind much of the year on the Challenger Tour should be commended, but the movement and consistency gap he faces in this matchup might be too much to overcome.

Prediction: Marozsan in 2

Marin Cilic vs Nikoloz Basilashvili

Head-to-head: Cilic 1-0 Basilashvili

Both players are past their peaks, but Cilic’s serve and heavy plus one forehand on hard courts still make him the steadier option in this matchup. Basilashvili can hit purple patches, but his inconsistency has often undone him and Cilic should control enough rallies to come through.

Prediction: Cilic in 2

Sebastian Korda vs Zizou Bergs

Head-to-head: First meeting

Korda’s smooth baseline game and ability to flatten out his groundstrokes make him dangerous on this surface, though he has struggled with consistency and injuries this season. Bergs brings plenty of fight and variety, and could push this into a battle, but if Korda serves well enough to keep points short, his chances of advancing rise considerably, as his overall ball quality remains superior to Bergs.

Prediction: Korda in 3

Lorenzo Sonego vs Yannick Hanfmann

Head-to-head: Sonego 2-0 Hanfmann

Sonego’s attacking style and flair give him the edge here, but Hanfmann’s heavy game can still make him dangerous if he finds his rhythm. Their past meetings suggest Sonego knows how to handle this matchup. With both players capable of streaky play, momentum swings are likely before Sonego ultimately prevails, and while it may not be straightforward, he should extend his lead in the head-to-head.

Prediction: Sonego in 3

About Zain Mustafa

Being brought up in a sports-watching home, some of the spheres flying across the TV screen stuck with me more than others, the yellow fuzzy one probably the most. A lefty Mallorcan got me into it, a righty Murcian has kept me in it after him, but to be honest, once I was in, I never felt like leaving anyway.
