Preparations for the US Open continue at the WTA Cleveland this week as Day 1 gets underway with six matches on the schedule. French tennis sensation Lois Boisson will play her first match in this tournament against the resurgent Swiss lefty Jil Teichmann. Who will progress to the next round?
WTA Cleveland Day 2 Predictions
Katie Boulter vs Yuan Yue
Head-to-head: Boulter 2-0 Yue
Katie Boulter’s season has been average at best so far, with only 16 wins from 30 matches. She also lost the mantle as Britain’s top-ranked WTA player and has plenty of points to defend in October. So this will be a good time to take off that pressure. But rhythm isn’t there, and Yuan Yue is the kind of player who can make her life difficult. The Chinese woman could grind her way to victory here.
Prediction: Yue in 3
Suzan Lamens vs Wang Xinyu
Head-to-head: first meeting
Wang Xinyu is having a respectable season with 21 wins and knocking on the door of the Top 30. She could break through after Cleveland, where she had previously made the quarterfinals. Suzan Lamens won her only WTA title at this level last year in Osaka, but hasn’t built on that success. The Dutchwoman is a steady performer but may fall short in matching Wang’s heavy-hitting baseline game.
Prediction: Wang in 3
Lois Boisson vs Jil Teichmann
Head-to-head: first meeting
Lois Boisson had a sensational summer in Europe, making all the headlines at Roland Garros with that historic semifinal finish. She also won her first WTA title shortly after in Hamburg. This will be her first match in nearly a month. Jil Teichmann has also enjoyed a great run of form this season at the lower tiers and re-entered the Top 100. The Swiss southpaw has a natural game that should translate to success on hard courts against Boisson, who is making her debut in this swing.
Prediction: Teichmann in 2
