ATP Cincinnati’s quick courts tend to reward players who can either impose themselves early with pace or stay disciplined enough to absorb and redirect it. With most of the field looking to fine-tune their games ahead of the US Open, matchups here can often hinge on small bursts of momentum rather than long stretches of dominance. Recent form offers clues, but these conditions have a way of keeping things interesting. As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match on the schedule. But who will advance?
ATP Cincinnati Day 4 Predictions
Alex de Minaur vs Reilly Opelka
Head-to-Head: de Minaur 5–0 Opelka
Alex de Minaur has been one of the tour’s more consistent performers this summer, using his speed and counterpunching to great effect. He also has a strong lead in head-to-head and comes in with the kind of consistency that has served him well all summer. Opelka’s serve will always be a threat in these conditions, but his lack of match rhythm makes it harder to sustain pressure over longer rallies. If De Minaur keeps points physical and avoids giving away quick free points, he’ll be in a strong position to extend that record.
Prediction: de Minaur in 2
Francisco Comesana vs Luciano Darderi
Head-to-Head: first meeting
Both players have been enjoying solid stretches, with Luciano Darderi carrying momentum from a strong run earlier in the summer after clinging the title in Umag and Comesana making steady progress at tour level. Their first tour meeting promises to deliver as neither tends to shy away from long, physical rallies. This one could be decided by which player is sharper in the key moments rather than any obvious gap in ability.
Prediction: Darderi in 3
Luca Nardi vs Denis Shapovalov
Head-to-Head: first meeting
Denis Shapovalov has been one of the standout performers this summer, showing flashes of his trademark shotmaking that can take the racquet out of his opponent’s hands. Luca Nardi has been quietly building confidence with a string of competitive performances, and he moves well enough to test the Canadian’s patience. If Shapovalov keeps his unforced errors in check, he’ll have the edge in first-strike tennis, but this could turn if Nardi drags him into extended exchanges.
Prediction: Shapovalov in 3
Karen Khachanov vs Valentin Royer
Head-to-Head: first meeting
Valentin Royer, fresh from qualifying, has already banked a valuable win here and comes in with nothing to lose. Khachanov has been solid without being spectacular in recent weeks, narrowly losing the final in Toronto to Ben Shelton, but his heavy, flat hitting can do damage on these courts. The question will be whether Royer can handle that weight of shot over the course of the match, especially if Khachanov finds his range early.
Prediction: Khachanov in 2
