An action-packed Day 3 of ATP Washington action awaits. 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev’s matchup with the huge-serving and home favorite Reilly Opelka could be one of the matches of the tournament. Ten contests are scheduled, and three of them are predicted in this article. We here at LWOT predict the action in three articles, and matches include Frances Tiafoe vs. Aleksandar Kovacevic and Taylor Fritz vs. Aleksandar Kovacevic.
ATP Washington Day 3 Predictions
Alex de Minaur vs Yunchaokete Bu
Head-to-head: De Minaur 1-0 Bu
Although Bu defeated David Goffin in two sets, he will almost certainly need to raise his game against de Minaur. Having enough firepower to break the Australian down is crucial against one of the fastest players to have ever played the men’s game. Although the conditions in Washington are pretty quick, I do not think Bu will be able to handle de Minaur’s intensity in the rallies consistently.
Prediction: De Minaur in 2
Andrey Rublev vs Learner Tien
Head-to-head: First meeting
Rublev has fallen in his opening match at tournaments more often this season than in recent years. Tien showed how talented he is at the Australian Open and at some other events since. The American thrives most when he is the aggressor in the rallies, which will be challenging against Rublev because of his firepower. If the 10-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist performs well, I think Tien will be overwhelmed in the rallies.
Prediction: Rublev in 2
Daniil Medvedev vs Reilly Opelka
Head-to-head: Medvedev 4-2 Opelka
Medvedev has not won a title in over two years ago. An ATP 500 tournament on medium-fast hard courts like the ones in Washington is one of his best opportunities to change that statistic. Despite how blistering Opelka’s serve is, Medvedev starts this matchup as the favorite. His game is well-suited to handling powerful servers, and Opelka has done well to win two of their six previous meetings.
Prediction: Medvedev in 2
