The Romanian fans in Iasi will have three home favorites to support on semifinal day. Sorana Cirstea, Jaqueline Cristian, and Irina-Camelia Begu are the local players scheduled to be in action. Jil Teichmann, who will face Cirstea, is the only outlier. As always, we here at LWOT predict both semifinals, but which players do you think will win?
WTA Iasi Semifinal Predictions
Jaqueline Cristian vs Irina-Camelia Begu
Head-to-head: Begu 1-0 Cristian
Cristian’s route to the semifinal has been easier than her compatriot’s. She defeated Daria Lodikova and Panna Udvardy in straight sets and benefited from Jana Fett’s retirement in the opening set of their quarterfinal. Begu started with a comfortable win against Nao Hibino, but needed three sets to overcome Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva and Anna Siskova.
Each player faces a different type of pressure in this encounter. The higher-ranked Cristian is the favorite to win, while 34-year-old Begu knows this could be one of her last opportunities to reach a WTA final. Cristian, who reached a final on clay in Morocco in May, is capable of handling the occasion. It will be challenging for Begu, at this stage of her career, to do the running needed to handle Cristian’s powerful forehand.
Prediction: Cristian in 2
Sorana Cirstea vs Jil Teichmann
Head-to-head: Cirstea 3-3 Teichmann
After a challenging last 12 months because of injuries and patchy form, Cirstea has returned to form in Iasi. The 2023 US Open quarterfinalist did not drop a set in victories against Mihaela Buzarnescu, Varvara Gracheva, and Maria Lourdes Carle. Teichmann had to work harder in wins against Miriam Bianca Bulgaru, Maja Chwalinska, and Simona Waltert.
The Swiss player has won the last three meetings between the pair. However, they have not met in over two years, and Cirstea prevailed in their sole previous match on clay. Cirstea’s level has undoubtedly been superior throughout the tournament, but being one win away from a first final on home soil is a different kind of pressure. If the 35-year-old can manage that, she is the favorite to triumph, but this could be a tight battle.
Prediction: Cirstea in 3
