Cameron Norrie in action ahead of the ATP Madrid Open.

Cameron Norrie the last British man standing at Wimbledon

The home crowd at Wimbledon had their hopes pinned on several of their UK players when the event had started. As we stand one day away from the quarterfinals, only one Brit has been able to survive the storm of the expectations. Cameron Norrie came through an incredible five set thriller against Nicolas Jarry to stay alive and true to most expectations in the tournament.

Norrie comes through difficult five setter

In his first three rounds Norrie had just dropped a couple of sets and wrapped up wins rather easily. However, the fourth round contest against Jarry was one that would test Norrie mentally and would determine whether he has the grit to go all the way. The Brit was two sets to love up. Jarry was in no mood to exit the event just then. He started serving better to clinch two back to back tiebreaks and push the match into a deciding fifth set. That’s when Norrie came up with the goods and sealed the match 6-3 7-6 6-7 6-7 6-3. At the net, Jarry had a tense exchange with Norrie at the conclusion of the match, but that didn’t overshadow Norrie’s gutsy performance, as he withstood Jarry’s barrage of winners, and was impeccable on serve to win the match.

Norrie on many occasions has mentioned that he wants to do great things for British tennis the way Andy Murray has done. Murray with two Wimbledon titles under his belt had brought back long awaited glory to British tennis. Norrie now finds himself in the quarter finals trying to emulate that glory. He is drawn against #2 Carlos Alcaraz. Alcaraz has shown some fragility with a bunch of unforced errors in each of his matches. However, the Spaniard also hits a large number of winners to nullify his mistakes and seal wins. Norrie will have to cut down on his own errors and limit moments of magic from Alcaraz.

A win over Alcaraz would then propel Norrie to his previous best result at Wimbledon. Norrie made it to the last 4 semifinals stage back in 2022. That was the closest he had come to title glory. Fans will have their fingers crossed to see the left hander push that extra mile and beat his previous best result at the Championships. Despite struggling for form and fitness at the start of the season, it’s fitting that Norrie is the last British hope in this tournament.
