Wimbledon Shake-Up: 19 Seeds Including Alexander Zverev Out in 4 Days

The 2025 Wimbledon has offered fans pretty of surprises, as just 4 days into the tournament and 19 out of the 32 seeds have been eliminated in the men’s section. Five of the top ten seeds have already been shown the exit gates. It is a carnage and has not been seen in a while in the men’s draw. A few top seeds survived some serious scares as well but have managed to hang on.

Many favorites unable to pass first two hurdles

Serious title contenders like Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev and home favorite Jack Draper are a part of this infamous list of those who have exited. Potential contenders such as Lorenzo Musetti, Holger Rune and Alexander Bublik too are out of the tournament and haven’t had any impact this year. Second seed Carlos Alcaraz and fifth seed Taylor Fritz were also given a serious scare in the first round matches however the Spaniard and American saw off the tied to progress.

2002 Australian Open top seed fall out

A top seed fall out like this has been seen only twice previously in this century. The 2002 Australian Open was one such strange event. Coincidentally that too saw 19 out of the 32 seeds and five out of the top ten seeds out in the first four days. Lleyton Hewitt and Gustavo Kuerten were the top two seeds and couldn’t go past their very first hurdle and crashed out in round 1.

2020 US Open seed exit

Another such bizarre instance was at the 2020 US Open. The situation was a little better here as seeds made it to the third round but many crashed right there not advancing any further. 20 out of the 32 seeds couldn’t make it past the third round and only four of the top ten seeds made it to the quarterfinals. This event is remembered for the infamous disqualification of Novak Djokovic after he accidentally hit the line umpire with the ball.

The one reason that stands out in this premature exit of seeds from the current Wimbledon edition is the inability to adjust to grass after a long season. There have been many shockers in the past at the Grand Slam however this time around the numbers are steep. As mentioned earlier a few have survived the scare and it is interesting to see how many more seeds exit in the next two days of round 3.

Playing on grass courts, the tennis is more unpredictable, but many veteran players are thriving this Wimbledon, like Marin Cilic and Grigor Dimitrov, while some of the young, heralded talents on tour have not risen to the occasion this tournament. We will see what surprises await into week 2 of Wimbledon.
