Elise Mertens in action ahead of WTA Bad Homburg.

WTA Den Bosch Day 1 Predictions Including Elise Mertens vs Viktoriya Tomova

There are six intriguing matches on the slate on day one at WTA Den Bosch and, as ever, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match on the slate, including Katerina Siniakova vs Anna Blinkova. But who will book their spot in the second round in the Netherlands?

WTA Den Bosch Day 1 Predictions

Lulu Sun vs Anouck Vrancken Peeters

Head-to-head: first meeting

Lulu Sun hasn’t been able to replicate her performances from last year, but grass is the surface where she made a name for herself with a memorable run at Wimbledon and she will look to do some damage this week. She has a favourable first-round match against home hope Anouck Vrancken Peeters, who is playing her first main-draw match. The crowd will be on her side, but Sun is the superior player at this moment and should win.

Prediction: Sun in 3

Veronika Kudermetova vs Polina Kudermetova

Head-to-head: V. Kudermetova 1-0 P. Kudermetova

Veronika Kudermetova is one of the few experienced grass court players in the draw and has a brilliant record at the WTA Den Bosch Open. The former finalist has consistently won matches this season but failed to make a deep run. This could be her week, not just to make a run but to contend for the title. She will face her sister, Polina Kudermetova, for the second time in the last one and a half months. The younger sister is on a five-match losing streak, and it’s hard to see her get anything out of this.

Prediction: V. Kudermetova in 2

Elise Mertens vs Viktoriya Tomova

Head-to-head: Mertens 1-0 Tomova

Elise Mertens’ clay court season did not go as planned, and she now has to make up for it on her worst surface. She has a difficult first-round encounter against Viktoriya Tomova, but the Belgian will not be very concerned because Tomova has struggled this season, and grass is also her least favourite surface. If Mertens plays anywhere close to her best, she will win this. I am going with a tight two-setter.

Prediction: Mertens in 2
