The first round of both the men’s and women’s singles will conclude on Day of the French Open. We’ll be treated to 20 women’s matches on Tuesday, and–as always–our writers here at LWOT share their thoughts on all of the matches with you. We split the matches between five articles, with the other four articles featuring Coco Gauff vs Olivia Gadecki, Mirra Andreeva vs Cristina Bucsa, Jessica Pegula vs Anca Todoni, and Victoria Azarenka vs Yanina Wickmayer. Predicting these matches are Jordan Reynolds, Damian Kust, and Ilemona Onekutu. Who do you think will reach Round 2?
French Open Day 3 Women’s Predictions
Elina Avanesyan vs Anhelina Kalinina
Jordan:
Kalinina is the more aggressive player and likes time on her shots. She will get that from Avanesyan, who does not hit with much power. However, the Armenian has been to the fourth round in her last two appearances in Paris, and I back her to grind out a result in what might be a lengthy match.
Prediction: Avanesyan in 3
Damian:
Avanesyan loves Roland Garros, reaching the fourth round in her last two appearances and posting some incredible wins like over Zheng last year. She usually performs better against players a little more power-oriented than Kalinina, but that Paris magic has to count for something. Even with opening-round losses in Madrid and Rome.
Prediction: Avanesyan in 3
Ilemona:
Both players enter Roland-Garros in poor form, but Elina Avanesyan’s past success in Paris gives her a clear edge. The world No. 36 has reached the second week here two years in a row and already owns a straight-sets Grand Slam win over Anhelina Kalinina. With the Ukrainian mired in a prolonged slump, another early exit seems all but certain.
Prediction: Avanesyan in 3
Sonay Kartal vs Erika Andreeva
Jordan:
Andreeva is very talented, but also not as natural on clay as her sister Mirra. Kartal routinely extends the rallies and the onus will be on Andreeva to hit through her. That is not the best matchup for the 20-year-old on clay.
Prediction: Kartal in 2
Damian:
Kartal doesn’t have much experience on clay, but she’s a smart player who’s already finding her way around the surface. As long as her fitness is fine (retired a couple of weeks ago), she should be able to take down the older Andreeva sister, who hasn’t been doing well at all this season with a 5-14 record.
Prediction: Kartal in 2
Ilemona:
Sonay Kartal brings ranking and momentum including a Madrid upset over Kudermetova against struggling Erika Andreeva (5-14 season). Though Andreeva’s talent keeps it interesting, Kartal’s consistency earns her the slight edge to progress.
Prediction: Kartal in 2
Karolina Muchova vs Alycia Parks
Jordan:
Muchova has not played a match on clay in 2025 due to injury. That presents an opportunity for Parks, but I still favor the Czech to win. The 2023 French Open runner-up’s variety is a bad matchup for Parks, who hits her groundstrokes hard and flat.
Prediction: Muchova in 2
Damian:
Even with Muchova not playing since Miami, most slow clay performances of Parks just tend to be completely unwatchable. This year she’s won one match on the dirt, and that was in the altitude conditions in Madrid. She won’t make it physical either, which should be good for Muchova in regards to making a comeback and looking to build stamina.
Prediction: Muchova in 2
Ilemona:
Karolina Muchova, a 2023 semifinalist, returns to Paris with a point to prove after an injury-plagued season. The Czech’s crafty all-court game thrives on clay, but her fitness remains a question mark. Power-hitting Alycia Parks poses a dangerous challenge—her massive serve and flat strikes can dominate when firing. However, the American’s inconsistency on clay (4-6 record this spring) and lack of Roland Garros experience tilt the edge to Muchova, provided her body holds up.
Prediction: Muchova in 2
Sofia Kenin vs Varvara Gracheva
Jordan:
Gracheva is wildly inconsistent but came alive last year on home soil during her run to the fourth round at Roland Garros. Kenin has enjoyed a much better season so far than in 2024. However, she is often susceptible to an upset and I feel Gracheva could find her best in front of supportive fans again.
Prediction: Gracheva in 3
Damian:
Kenin has been one of the positive surprises of the season so far, operating at a level of consistency that was unreachable for her last year. It’s doubtful she can reach the final like she did five years ago, but taking on Gracheva right now seems very doable. Just gotta play at her standard level and she should be fine.
Prediction: Kenin in 2
Ilemona:
Sofia Kenin gets the slight edge over in-form Varvara Gracheva, despite struggling since her Charleston run. Gracheva’s clay prowess makes this tight, but Kenin’s big-match experience could prove decisive in front of a potentially hostile crowd.
Prediction: Gracheva in 3
