French Open: David Goffin and Three Other Players Withdraw From Event

The 2025 French Open begins on Sunday. This year’s tournament has some intriguing storylines, including whether Coco Gauff is the favorite after her Madrid Open and Italian Open final runs and how Jannik Sinner will perform in his first Grand Slam appearance since returning from a three-month suspension. Four players withdrew from Roland Garros before the main draw on Thursday. This article names those players and lists their replacements on the entry list.

Four Players Withdraw From French Open

Which Players Have Withdrawn?

Zhang Zhizhen was the first player to withdraw from the French Open. The Chinese star has not played on the ATP Tour since losing in the opening round of the BNP Paribas Open in March. His continued absence is due to a knee injury, and he has not given a timeline for returning to professional action. Zhang reached the third round at the 2023 and 2024 iterations in Paris.

Shang Juncheng was the second man to elect not to play at the French Open. He last appeared in January at the Australian Open, retiring in the opening round with a foot injury. That severe issue has left him sidelined ever since, and he had surgery in March. While necessary for his recovery, it could lead to a lengthy spell away from the ATP Tour.

Sara Sorribes Tormo was the only woman to withdraw from the prestigious Grand Slam. Last month, the Spaniard announced that she was taking a break from professional tennis because of the mental and physical strain it had taken on her. Her announcement sounded like she would miss the rest of the 2025 season at a minimum.

David Goffin was the third man to withdraw from the French Open. The former quarterfinalist at Roland Garros missed the Italian Open with an injury he sustained in Madrid a couple of weeks earlier. That problem has not healed in time, and the Belgian veteran will miss the season’s second Grand Slam. Goffin created headlines in March’s Miami Open by stunningly defeating Carlos Alcaraz.

Who Replaces Those Players on the Entry List?

Zhizhen’s place at the French Open was taken by Luca Nardi. The Italian is known for managing a stunning upset against Novak Djokovic at the 2024 BNP Paribas Open. His results since that success have been mixed, but he possesses a dangerous game when it fires. Hugo Dellien benefited from Juncheng’s decision to withdraw. The Bolivian is one of the most prominent clay-court specialists in the game. All 42 of his Challenger Tour and Futures Circuit finals have come on the dirt.

Sorribes Tormo was replaced by Yuan Yue. Last year’s ATX Open champion usually plays her best tennis on hard courts and will try to improve her results on clay. The 26-year-old lost in the opening round in her previous two appearances at Roland Garros. A yet-to-be-confirmed lucky loser will take Goffin’s place at the French Open.
