It promises to be a great day of WTA Madrid action on Day 2. Bianca Andreescu continues her return from injury with a fascinating matchup against McCartney Kessler. We here at LWOT predict all the matches, but which players do you think will reach the next round?
WTA Madrid Day 2 Predictions
Ashlyn Krueger vs Anastasia Potapova
Head-to-head: First meeting
There will be a sharp clash of styles in this matchup. Krueger tries to overpower her opponents while Potapova relies much more on consistency and defensive skills. Potapova’s best chance of beating Kruger is on clay, but the surface in Madrid is faster than most tournaments on the dirt. That might give the American a slight edge in what promises to be a lengthy battle because of Potapova’s style.
Prediction: Krueger in 3
Maria Sakkari vs Wang Xinyu
Head-to-head: Sakkari 1-0 Wang
Although Sakkari has not come near to her prime level since returning from a shoulder injury at the start of the year, she does have a decent record in opening-round matches in 2025. The Greek is also more natural on clay than her Chinese opponent. Wang infamously upset Jessica Pegula on grass and hard courts last year and can play on any surface. However, she is least likely to defeat Sakkari on a clay court.
Prediction: Sakkari in 2
Bianca Andreescu vs McCartney Kessler
Head-to-head: First meeting
Andreescu played her opening match of 2025 at last week’s Rouen Open, losing in a deciding set tiebreak against Suzan Lamens. Kessler has enjoyed an incredible breakthrough since winning her maiden title in Cleveland in August. But her successes have come on hard courts, and she is less comfortable on clay. This might be a scrappy affair at times between a rusty Andreescu and Kessler trying to find her feet on clay. Kessler’s greater match fitness over the last few months might prove to be the difference in the end.
Prediction: Kessler in 3
