The remaining Round of 32 matches will be completed on Day 4 of the ATP Monte Carlo Masters. Two-time French Open runner-up Casper Ruud and Daniil Medvedev are set to be in action, and Richard Gasquet will also continue his farewell at the tournament. As always, we here at LWOT predict all the matches, including Carlos Alcaraz vs Francisco Cerundolo and Novak Djokovic vs Alejandro Tabilo.
ATP Monte Carlo Day 4 Predictions
Richard Gasquet vs Daniel Altmaier
Head-to-head: Gasquet 2-1 Altmaier
Gasquet might have mixed feelings about his upcoming retirement at the French Open since he has produced some of his best tennis in a while at his last few tournaments. The Frenchman’s level against Matteo Arnaldi in the opening round was superb. Altmaier got a great win against Felix Auger-Aliassime, although the Canadian was nowhere near his best. Both men have one-handed backhands, and Gasquet’s superiority in that department might prove the difference, especially since the slow clay in Monte-Carlo gives him time on it.
Prediction: Gasquet in 3
Daniil Medvedev vs Alexandre Muller
Head-to-head: Medvedev 2-0 Muller
Medvedev’s lengthy battle against Karen Khachanov was arguably the match of the tournament so far. That exceptional match showed the 2021 US Open champion can perform on clay when he puts his mind to it. Muller usually plays his best tennis on clay, but he will probably find it challenging to hit through Medvedev’s defense in the slow conditions.
Prediction: Medvedev in 2
Grigor Dimitrov vs Valentin Vacherot
Head-to-head: Dimitrov 1-0 Vacherot
Dimitrov and Vacherot comfortably won in the opening round against Nicolas Jarry and Jan-Lennard Struff, both big servers. Vacherot’s natural talent makes it somewhat head-scratching that he has never cracked the Top 100 and currently sits outside the Top 200. Dimitrov’s form since the start of 2024 has been among the most consistent of his career, and he can be trusted more to play well again than Vacherot.
Prediction: Dimitrov in 2
Casper Ruud vs Roberto Bautista Agut
Head-to-head: Bautista Agut 3-1 Ruud
Bautista Agut has stood out for many years as a Spaniard whose best surface is not clay. Now 36, some might assume clay suits him even less now, but he made a mockery of that by comprehensively beating Brandon Nakashima in the opening round. While that victory was impressive, an even better level will almost certainly be needed against Ruud. Bautista Agut does not have enough firepower to hit through Ruud, and his reduced athleticism at 36 makes the task even more difficult.
Prediction: Ruud in 2
