Three Players Receive Barcelona Open Wild Cards

The 2025 Barcelona Open is one of two ATP 500 tournaments that will be played in the third week of April. Main draw action will kick off on April 14th. Top players who have signed up to play include Carlos Alcaraz, Casper Ruud, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev, Alex de Minaur, and Holger Rune.

The top-seeded Alcaraz missed his title defense last year because of a forearm injury. He is expected to make his fourth main draw appearance at his home tournament.

The field is pretty stacked, with seven of the eight seeded players ranked in the world’s Top 15. Last year, Ruud deifed the odds to win his first title at the 500 level. The entry list includes three confirmed wild cards. Six players from qualifying will also join the main draw.

Three Players Receive Barcelona Open Wild Cards

The first wild card has gone to two-time former champion Kei Nishikori. The Japanese star has made three finals in total in Barcelona and last competed in 2021 when he was knocked out in the last 16 stage by Rafael Nadal. Nishikori will use this tournament as part of his preparations for the French Open. Last year, he played eight matches on clay.

The second wild card entrant is crowd favorite Pablo Carreno Busta. The three men in this list have a lot in common. They are all former Top 10 players and have dealt with injury setbacks at the tail end of their careers. Carreno Busta finished runner-up in his last trip to Barcelona three years ago. He played six matches on clay in the whole of last season.

The third wild card is three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka. The Swiss one-hander recovered from multiple knee surgeries in recent years to prolong his career. At 40, he will be the oldest player in the Barcelona Open draw this season. He is a two-time semifinalist at the event. Wawrinka last lifted an ATP title in 2017.
