WTA Merida Day 2 Predictions Including Maria Sakkari vs Zeynep Sonmez

Maria Sakkari continues her comeback from a severe shoulder injury last season at the WTA Merida Open on Day 2. The Greek has fond memories of Mexico, having won her sole WTA 1000 title at the Guadalajara Open in 2023. Her match is one of seven scheduled for the second day. We at LWOT predict all the contests here and in a separate article, including Sloane Stephens vs Petra Martic.

WTA Merida Day 2 Predictions

Marta Kostyuk vs Daria Saville

Head-to-head: Kostyuk 2-0 Saville

Kostyuk and Saville’s lengthy three-set battle at last year’s Wimbledon was one of the most physically brutal matches of 2024. The slow conditions in Merida mean a repeat of that is possible. Kostyuk defends and attacks slightly better than Saville at her best, especially with her backhand. It might not be the most enjoyable match that Kostyuk plays this season, but expect her to fight through to the next round.
Prediction: Kostyuk in 2

Lulu Sun vs Rebecca Sramkova

Head-to-head: First meeting

Both women broke through suddenly in 2024. However, neither of them has carried that momentum into 2025. That is especially true of Sun, with just one victory to her name so far this year. There could be further misery on the cards for the New Zealander because the slow conditions should suit Sramkova slightly more. Sun’s formidable left-handed topspin forehand will have less bite in the turgid conditions in Merida.
Prediction: Sramkova in 2

Maria Sakkari vs Zeynep Sonmez

Head-to-head: First meeting

Sakkari was soundly beaten by 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu in the opening round in Dubai last week, but the Greek’s overall level since returning from a shoulder injury has not been bad. Most of her performances this year would be good enough to defeat Sonmez. Although the Turkish player is a fighter, her game is also pretty limited. Sakkari should be able to dominate in the rallies throughout this match.
Prediction: Sakkari in 2
