Ten matches are scheduled on Day 2 of the ATP Dubai Tennis Championships. Defending champion Ugo Humbert gets his campaign underway in a difficult opening match against Jiri Lehecka. Croatia’s Marin Cilic will have no room for respite in his comeback as he takes on Alex de Minaur. Who will reach the second round?
ATP Dubai Day 2 Predictions
Felix Auger-Aliassime vs Alexander Bublik
Head-to-head: Auger-Aliassime 2-2 Bublik
Bublik is battling a ranking crisis this week. He is currently outside the Top 50 and the prospect of his ranking cascading further is extremely high. The flamboyant Kazakh is defending runner-up points in Dubai following his run to the final last year. With just two wins all season, Bublik has a lot of heavy lifting to do. The crazy thing is that he’s been in such predicaments before and tends to produce a title-winning run out of nowhere. Auger-Aliassime was one of his victims during his remakable title win in Montpellier last season. If Bublik turns up with his unorthodox clutch play, this could get interesting. But as things stand, the Canadian should be the overwhelming favorite.
Prediction: Auger-Aliassime in 2
Jiri Lehecka vs Ugo Humbert
Head-to-head: first meeting
Ugo Humbert won this event last season, fending off serious competition. If he is to repeat the trick, then his task doesn’t get any easier starting with a first-round meeting againt the energetic Jiri Lehecka. The Czech was semifinalist in Doha (lost to British lefty Jack Draper). He pulled off his biggest Tour level win by ranking when he upset Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinal. On paper, this is a finely poised matchup that should feature a lot of extended rallies. The outcome hinges on which player has better baseline stability and it’s a toss-up on who will win.
Prediction: Lehecka in 3
Grigor Dimitrov vs Christopher O’Connell
Head-to-head: Dimitrov 3-0 O’Connell
Grigor Dimitrov hasn’t won any of his last three matches. Two of them resulted in retirement. As strange as it sounds, Dimitrov has never won a main draw match in Dubai. He can take comfort from the fact that he’s beaten Christopher O’Connell each time they played. But if fitness continues to dictate Dimitrov’s season, then this could be a long and arduous jorney for the Bulgarian.
Prediction: O’Connell in 3
Alex de Minaur vs Marin Cilic
Head-to-head: De Minaur 2-2 Cilic
As far as comebacks go, Marin Cilic didn’t disappoint in his first match of the new season in Doha even though he lost in straight sets to Carlos Alcaraz. The problem for the Croatian is that it doesn’t get any easier when he is not seeded and will play a second Top 10 opponent in his second tournament. This is quite an interesting rivalry locked at two wins apiece. De Minaur took their last meeting in a Davis Cup tie three years ago. It is the Australian who has the higher upside at this stage of their careers and Cilic will need to wait for his first win of 2025.
Prediction: De Minaur in 2
