Fritz Spoils Brooksby’s Return with Decisive Victory

Taylor Fritz cruised into the second round of the Australian Open on Tuesday, conceding just five games as he aims to consolidate on a standout 2024 and end a lengthy title drought for American men in Melbourne.

The fourth-ranked player swiftly overpowered Jenson Brooksby, who was returning from a suspension for missing anti-doping tests, with a score of 6-2 6-0 6-3 on John Cain Arena, and he will next face Chilean Cristian Garin, who overpowered Croat Borna Coric in three sets.

Fritz began the match strongly on a warm day, breaking Brooksby for 4-2 and securing another break to take the opening set in only 28 minutes.

His baseline prowess was evident as he dominated the rallies, securing a double break for a 4-0 lead in the second set. There was no recovery for the struggling Brooksby, who was participating in his first competition since the penultimate edition of this event.

After undergoing surgeries on both wrists in 2023, Brooksby faced a 13-month ban for not attending three drug tests within a 12-month timeframe.

It’s been over 20 years since an American man reached the final in Australia, and the 27-year-old is emerging as the best hope for American tennis in years to change the narrative. Fritz became the first American man to reach a US Open final in over 20 years last summer. He will certainly be hoping to continue that momentum into this season and achieve similar success at the first Major of the 2025 season. How far can he go?
