Alexander Zverev open to the idea of Boris Becker coaching him in the future

Alexander Zverev has expressed interest in potentially working with tennis legend Boris Becker. However, the German player is keen to maintain his current coaching setup, at least until his campaigns in Australia are over. His father currently coaches him, but he has revealed that he is in contact with the six-time Grand Slam Champion and holds the former World No. 1 in high regard.

While the 27-year-old is open to the former German tennis player joining his team, he remains uncertain about one key factor: how Becker travels. The 2021 Olympic singles gold medalist emphasized that he would not change his coaching staff before the Australian Open but would evaluate the possibility of working with the 57-year-old afterward.

Becker remains a potential addition to Zverev’s team. However, the logistical aspects of the six-time Grand Slam champion’s travel are a point of uncertainty for Zverev.

The 27-year-old Zverev stated, “I love Boris, and I also believe he has an incredible knowledge of tennis. But I am unsure about how he travels. That is the only question mark regarding him. Once he sorts that out and clarifies it, we can discuss it further. We are still in contact with him and speak often. For now, as far as Australia is concerned, it will remain as it is, and then we will see.”

Zverev’s relationship with Becker continues to evolve, and both have kept an open line of communication, opening the door to a future partnership.

In 2024, Zverev has made impressive strides in his career, particularly following his recovery from a serious ankle injury. The 27-year-old reached his career-high ranking of No. 2 this year, marking a major achievement after his difficult recovery from a torn ligament injury sustained during the 2022 French Open semifinal. Zverev’s 2024 season saw him dominate the ATP circuit with a remarkable 69-21 win-loss record. He secured two Masters 1000 titles, triumphing at the Italian Open and Paris Masters and reaching the finals of Roland Garros for the first time in his career.

Before joining Holger Rune’s team, Becker coached Novak Djokovic to six Grand Slam titles, and his coaching pedigree remains highly regarded. The two-time ATP Finals Champion’s potential collaboration with the six-time Grand Slam Champion would be a significant development in the German player’s career, with both hopeful that any concerns regarding travel logistics can be resolved. The coming months will determine whether Zverev and Becker can form a successful coaching partnership soon.

Zverev’s decision to potentially bring Becker back as his coach stems from the legend’s successful coaching history, particularly his work with Djokovic. The three-time Wimbledon champion coached the 24-time Grand Slam champion from 2013 to 2016, a period during which the Serb won six Grand Slam titles, helping him solidify his dominance in men’s tennis. Zverev, who has yet to win a Grand Slam, could be seeking the expertise and experience that Becker brings, believing that his guidance could help him break through and achieve similar success.
