How can Jannik Sinner turn the rivalry around against Carlos Alcaraz

As Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner continue to dominate the tennis world, the question arises: How can the world #1 turn the rivalry around against his great rival? In 2024, both players have proved to be the leaders of the pack in men’s tennis, with each claiming two Grand Slam titles and Sinner reaching world #1 for the first time in his career. But despite the 23-year-old’s rise in the rankings and consistent performances, the 21-year-old holds the edge in their head-to-head encounters, leading 6-4 overall and 3-0 in 2024.

Their initial encounter in 2019 came at an ATP Challenger event, where Sinner was 17 and Alcaraz just 15. Back then, the Spaniard’s raw athleticism and explosive style of play made him the standout talent, while the Italian’s more measured, all-around game was less flashy but equally effective. Since then, both players have evolved their games, and their rivalry has become one of the most captivating in tennis. But over the course of 2o24, Alcaraz appeared to gain a decisive edge.

Jannik Sinner vs Carlos Alcaraz – Can the Italian regain his ground?

2024: A Glorious Year for Both, but Alcaraz Still Holds the Edge

Alcaraz continued to impress in 2024 with his raw power and explosiveness, winning the French Open and Wimbledon, showcasing his dominance on clay and grass. Sinner’s rise to world #1. on the other hand, was fueled by his exceptional consistency, illustrated by his triumphs at the Australian and US Open. Their contrasting playing styles have often been a critical factor in their matches, with the Spaniard’s aggressive game sometimes leading to inconsistencies. At the same time, the Italian ability to stay calm under pressure has often been a decisive factor in his victories.

In 2024, Alcaraz won twice on hard courts and once on clay. Their most recent meeting, at the 2024 China Open, saw the world #3 claim victory with a hard-fought 6-7(6), 6-4, 7-6(3) win in the final. However, the rivalry took an interesting turn in October, when they met in the final of the Six Kings Slam in Riyadh, an exhibition event, with the Italian gaining a measure of vengeance by defeating Alcaraz 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-3. Although this match doesn’t count towards their official head-to-head, it was a hard-fought affair and a significant moment for Sinner, demonstrating his ability to beat the 21-year-old.

What Can Sinner Do to Turn the Tables on Alcaraz?

For Sinner to turn the rivalry around, he will need to build on his strengths while addressing areas where the Spanish tennis player has had the upper hand. While both players are at their best when playing aggressively, the 23-year-old’s more strategic approach may be key to overcoming Alcaraz in future encounters. The 21-year-old explosive style often leads to unforced errors, particularly when facing a consistent counterpuncher like Sinner. If Sinner can continue to capitalize on these moments, he could shift the balance in his favor.

Moreover, Sinner needs to have a killer’s instinct against Alcaraz, similar to how he has with other players. In two of their three meetings in 2024, Sinner has had a lead, being set up at Indian Wells and two sets to one up in the Roland Garros semifinal. However, he has been unable to complete the padel, and Alcaraz has sneaked back into the match.
