Everyone is asking this question. Will Alexander Zverev ever win a Grand Slam title? The German will turn 28 next year without a Grand Slam title.
Currently ranked 2, Sascha is one of the best players in the world. His ability to play on any surface under any circumstances is great. His fitness, endurance, heavy hitting, great backhand, and physique suggest that he should be a Grand Slam champion.
The furthest he has come was at the 2020 US Open when he was leading 2-0 against Dominic Thiem in the final. He even served for the match in the fifth set while being 5-3 up. A few double faults and a couple of unforced errors cost him winning the title. Zverev took a moment this season and remembered this match that was 4 years ago. He said that back then, he was too young and inexperienced to win the Grand Slam title. Sascha explained that he is much more mature and ready to win his first Grand Slam.
At the beginning of the season, Zverev dominated in the Australian Open before his semifinal clash against Medvedev. In the semifinals, it all felt like the 2020 US Open final. Sascha started his semifinal clash against Medvedev better than he could have imagined. He won the first two sets comfortably. However, again, Zverev crumbled under pressure, and Daniil turned the match around.
Later on this season, Zverev reached the final at the French Open on his favorite surface. Once again, Sascha took the lead and went 2-1 up against Carlos Alcaraz. After winning the third set 7-5, Zverev looked exhausted on the court, and his footwork stopped working. Carlos took that chance and comfortably turned the match around. “Look, he played fantastic. He played better than me in the fourth and fifth set. It’s how it is. I felt like in this Grand Slam final, I did everything I could. At the US Open, I kind of gave it away myself. It’s a bit different,” said Zverev after another brutal Grand Slam final loss.
Roger Federer summed it up nicely. “When I watch him play, I see someone who plays far too passively, far too defensively in the decisive moments,” said Roger. “There is not much missing. But to win a Grand Slam, you must trust your shots and play more offensively. He has to believe in this path. Every cell in your body must feel this is the only right way. The title does not just come to you, especially not the first one,” Roger also mentioned.
We believe that Zverev will eventually win a Grand Slam title. The first one is always the hardest one. He will have his biggest chance at the French Open, especially if Carlos Alcaraz gets injured. As Federer previously mentioned, he needs to go all in and trust his instincts. We believe that once he gets his mind to the right place, Sascha will start winning the Grand Slam titles. He has every single weapon to do it. It is up to him to use his full potential.
