WTA Osaka Day 1 Predictions

Sofia Kenin vs Aoi Ito

Head-to-Head: First Meeting

Sofia Kenin has been far from her best this year and the last couple of months haven’t been closer to that form either. She has managed a lone win in three matches so far in Asia and a quick turn around will be a tall order against a local hopeful. The Japanese youngster Aoi Ito doesn’t have the main draw experience to trouble an inform Sofia Kenin but she would fancy her chances here after a solid run on the lower tiers. The crowd support should put enough wind in her sails to guarantee her a first win in her home competition.
Prediction: Ito in 3

Jessika Ponchet vs Elisabetta Cocciaretto

Head-to-Head: First Meeting

Ponchet must hope to capitalize upon her lucky loser berth and progress further. She takes on Cocciaretto whose form and confidence has been far from ideal in recent months. Cocciaretto hasn’t been able to put up back-to-back wins since landing on the continent and the draw here presents her an opportunity to do so. Getting past the first round will be the first test and I expect her to pass soundly.
Prediction: Cocciaretto in 2

McCartney Kessler vs Ena Shibahara

Head-to-Head: First Meeting

Ena Shibahara did not receive a wildcard from the home event in Osaka and nearly paid the price with a qualifying exit. She survived Linda Fruhvirtova, 3-6 7-6 7-5 (saved a match point) and Marina Stakusic, 2-6 7-6 7-6 (saved two) in nearly six combined hours over the weekend. She should hope to avoid any more close shaves and extend her stay here with a win over her young American opponent. A win here would be her fourth such in singles main draw appearances at WTA tournaments. Kessler, for her part, should like to replicate her run to the title at Cleveland back in August. She would count on her slightly extended experience on the main tour to guide her to a win here. The crowd will not make things easy for the American, but I expect her to have the marginal advantage.
Prediction: Kessler in 3
