Head-to-head: First meeting
Tsurenko has lost seven of her last eight matches since retiring against the Wimbledon semifinalist Donna Vekic with an injury at the French Open. Her one triumph against the 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu was also somewhat fortunate, with the Canadian falling apart after winning the opening set 6-0. Tomova reached the quarterfinal of the Korea Open last week. The Bulgarian has also improved in recent months after a slow start to the year and will be confident of beating Tsurenko.

McCartney Kessler vs Shuai Zhang
Head-to-head: First meeting
Can Zhang break her unprecedented 24-match losing streak in singles? She competed well in her last two defeats against Ashlyn Krueger and Veronika Kudermetova. Kessler’s run to the title at Tennis in the Land in Cleveland was one of the most surprising moments of 2024. Zhang will hope the American struggles for form after that shocking run, which often happens. However, it is difficult to back a player on such a long losing run.

Alycia Parks vs Qiang Wang
Head-to-head: First meeting
Wang announced that the Asian swing will be her final WTA tournaments, before she officially retires after the Chinese National Games next year. The former US Open quarterfinalist has not played many tournaments in the last two years. Parks, whose formidable serve should thrive in the fast conditions in Beijing, starts this contest as the favorite. Wang will need her home fans to try and inspire her at one of her final WTA events.

Taylor Townsend vs Martina Trevisan
Head-to-head: Townsend 1-1 Trevisan
Townsend defeated Trevisan in the opening round of the US Open a few weeks ago. Her powerful serve and willingness to come to the net suit the Beijing conditions. However, the American is often inconsistent, and whether she will recapture the form she had during the North American swing is unclear. Trevisan is a player who always fights to the end, but Townsend’s firepower makes her the favorite.
