The Asian swing on the WTA Tour begins on Monday with two tournaments–one of these in Hua Hin, which is being held for a second time this year due to a vacant spot on the calendar. The entry list is strong for the event despite six players withdrawing. Seven matches are scheduled for Day 1 in Hua Hin. We at LWOT predict all the matches on the slate here and in a separate article, including Katerina Siniakova vs Arina Rodionova.
WTA Hua Hin Day 1 Predictions
Alycia Parks vs Laura Siegemund
Head-to-head: First meeting
Siegemund possesses a playing style that Parks does not enjoy facing. She is crafty and emphasizes keeping the ball in play and mixing up the paces, countering the American’s power-based game. The German’s biggest issue is that this will be her second singles match since Wimbledon over two months ago. That rustiness could be damaging, but she is still backed to overcome Parks in three sets.
Prediction: Siegemund in 3
Tamara Zidansek vs Tatiana Prozorova
Head-to-head: Prozorova 1-0 Zidansek
This is an excellent opportunity for two players currently ranked outside the Top 200. Prozorova played outstandingly in qualifying to reach the main draw, dropping only three games in four sets. Zidansek did not have to play in the qualifying, but that could work against her in this matchup. Prozorova’s momentum from her excellent performances in the qualifiers makes her a slight favorite to progress in Hua Hin.
Prediction: Prozorova in 2
Katie Volynets vs Clara Tauson
Head-to-head: First meeting
Volynets has enjoyed her best-ever season. However, the American’s results dipped for the first time during the North American hardcourt season. This should be an entertaining match between players with differing styles. Tauson bases her game on power, while Volynets relies more on spin and her athleticism. The conditions in Hua Hin are usually among the slowest of the tournaments in Asia, which gives Volynets a slight edge.
Prediction: Volynets in 3
