Last year’s French Open runner-up Karolina Muchova returned from a long injury during the grass-court season. The Czech’s shot-making and complete game were severely missed during her time on the sidelines. Muchova won her first-round match at the US Open 6-3 7-5 against a gritty and determined Katie Volynets. She showed her unique talent during that contest with an incredible shot during the first set.

Muchova’s moment that left the crowd gasping in amazement happened at 4-1 40-15 in her favor when Volynets was serving. The American struck a good serve out wide, getting a short return from her opponent. Volynets then hit a forehand into the open space, and Muchova could only put her next shot into the air, leaving a smash for the home favorite to win the point. The Czech ran past Volynets’ smash while trying to get back into position, looking doomed in the rally.

However, Muchova instinctively hit a lob from behind her back. Making a connection with that shot was impressive enough, but her shot landed right on the baseline. Volynets left Muchova a smash with her next shot, which the French Open finalist duly put away to win the point.

Very few players could have executed a shot like that. It may only be Day 2 of the US Open, but it is already a contender for the best shot of the tournament. Karolina Muchova has a chance to entertain the fans further after progressing to the next round.
