Novak Djokovic is undoubtedly still basking in the glory of finally claiming an Olympic gold medal at Roland-Garros. The Serbian has now won every major honour in tennis. Unsurprisingly, Djokovic withdrew from the National Bank Open after his run in Paris. However, some fans were hopeful about him playing at next week’s Cincinnati Open. Unfortunately for the fans in Ohio, the 24-time Grand Slam champion has elected to withdraw from the event.
Novak Djokovic Withdraws From Cincinnati Open
The Cincinnati Open announced on social media that Djokovic would not compete at the tournament this year. Not many details were given about the situation. The event said they would miss the man who has won the title on three occasions, including last year. It seems clear the 37-year-old feels he needs a more extended break after the mammoth achievement of securing his first gold medal. Djokovic has also spoken honestly this year about the Grand Slams and the Olympics being his main goals.
Fans will be disappointed that a repeat of last year’s epic final between Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz is no longer possible. Djokovic defeated the Spaniard 5-7 7-6 7-6 after one of the greatest three-set matches in tennis history. The quality of the shotmaking from both men in the sweltering Cincinnati heat was incredible, and it will continue to live long in the memory of those who were watching.
Djokovic is replaced in the draw by Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. The big-serving 21-year-old has enjoyed a breakout season, including winning the title in Lyon and progressing to the fourth round of Wimbledon. His style makes him a difficult draw for any opponent. He could have a deep run at the Cincinnati Open if his powerful game finds its range.
