Which Players Have Withdrawn?
Jannik Sinner (Italy) was the most high-profile player to withdraw from the Paris Olympics. Unfortunately, the Australian Open champion is ill with tonsilitis, meaning he is too unwell to compete at Roland-Garros. Sinner confirmed he had been practicing in preparation for the event, but he became sick during his training period.
Andrey Rublev (Individual Neutral Athletes) was another big name to withdraw from the Paris Olympics. He has not made any official statement about his decision not to compete. Rublev’s mother said she thought it had to do with his health, but she admitted that her son had not given her the reason.
Hubert Hurkacz (Poland) also withdrew from the Paris Olympics. The 27-year-old retired from his second-round match against Arthur Fils at Wimbledon due to a knee injury, and he has not recovered in time for the games. This is also a blow for French Open champion Iga Swiatek, who was going to play doubles with her compatriot at Roland-Garros.
Ben Shelton (USA) was another player to withdraw from the Paris Olympics. This is not a major surprise. The 21-year-old plays his best tennis on North American hard courts, as shown by his run to the US Open semifinal last year. Therefore, he is prioritizing playing a full schedule in home conditions, rather than competing on clay.
Holger Rune (Denmark) was another notable player to withdraw from the Paris Olympics. The 21-year-old announced he had been playing with pain in his wrist during the clay and grass court season. Rune decided to follow medical recommendations about taking some time away from the sport.
