We have entered championship Sunday at ATP Newport as No. 2 seed Marcos Giron squares off against No. 3 seed Alex Michelsen for the crown. The Infosys Hall of Fame Open has provided some terrific theater all week and wraps up with a final between two compatriots on home soil. Marcos Giron vs Alex Michelsen
Head-to-Head: first meeting
Marcos Giron’s run to the ATP Newport finals has resulted in him achieving a career-high ranking of World No. 41. If he wins on Sunday, he will be ranked No. 38 on Monday. Giron is on pace to finish the 2024 season with the most tour-level wins of his career. His fluid game translates to all surfaces.
Alex Michelsen is back in the ATP Newport final after kickstarting his professional career at this event last season. Michelsen plays the prototypical American style of tennis, with a big serve and a bigger forehand. He can sometimes get loose, but the 19-year-old is closing in on the World’s Top 50.
Michelsen has cruised to the Newport final, not dropping a set in three matches. In fact, he has lost just 18 games in three matches. Giron has battled through two three-set battles and is hunting for his second title of the season. Giron is the more consistent player, but Michelsen has a higher ceiling. Given his current form, I’ll ride with the younger American in a decider.
